REPAIR PALLETS
Each year billions of pallets are built and used in the American economy to move numerous and various products. These pallets are often used multiple times. These pallets can be repaired and reused after a few uses and then sent back out for another cycle of shipments. Used and repaired pallets play an important role in keeping wooden pallets out of the landfills. Unlike plastic pallets, wood pallets can be repaired and reused after they have been damaged. We deal with #1 or #2 grade. Used #1 grade pallets are newer in their life cycle so they require less repairs. Most often we have only repaired 1-2 broken boards before they are ready to be used again. Used #2 grade pallets have been used multiple times. Most noticeably these may have a broken 2x4 which has been repaired with a block to improve its strength. Rest assured – all of our used pallets we sell have been well inspected by our pallet repair specialist along with being sorted, graded, and repaired to meet the shipping needs of our customers. |
HEAT TREATED PALLETS FOR EXPORTING
When shipping internationally all wood- packaging materials must be heat-treated. Certainly you have heard of IPPC, ISPM-15, HT, and MB when preparing for an international shipment requiring pallets or crates. All these letters might feel confusing and overwhelming but don’t have to be as we will walk you though it every step of the way. IPPC stands for International Plant Protection Convention. The IPPC consists of nearly 180 members who all belong to the united nations. Their purpose is to protect the world’s ecosystem by preventing the spread of disease and pests between countries. Because the IPPC is made up of UN members, this agency is recognized as a trusted source throughout the global community. The IPPC has established a safety regulation to help prevent the spread of pests, such as bugs, throughout the world. This regulation is called the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, or ISPM-15 for short. ISPM-15 requires: - All wood packaging being shipped between countries be heat-treated - All wood packaging must have a minimal amount of bark in order to prevent re-infestation. Wooden pallets and crates can either be heat-treated (HT) or fumigated with methyl-bromide (MB) to assure they are free from pests. Fumigation with methyl-bromide has been found to have a negative impact on the environment and can be toxic, so we at The Pallet Center, Inc. prefer and will only use the heat-treatment method. Heat-treating pallets and crates entail large chambers with industrial propane or natural gas burners and fans. These chambers hold about 400 pallets. We are required to heat-treat each pallet in these ovens. The thickest part of the pallet, which is generally the 2x4, is heated until the temperature at the center reaches 140 degrees Fahrenheit. We then hold the temperature at or above that mark for 35 minutes. This ensures that the pallets are bug-free at this point. We then stamp the pallets on each side with our ISPM-15 stamp making your pallets certified for international export. The Pallet Center, Inc. is certified on a monthly basis by Timber Products Inspection to ensure our continuous compliance. |
CRATES
We at iPallets Inc. understand that some items are too large and heavy for even the toughest heavy duty pallet, therefore these items require crates, boxes, or containers made from wood for added protection during handling and shipping. Wooden crates offer more strength and of course more protection. The style of wooden crate we chose is based on the load weight, dimensions, value, and characteristics of the item the crate is expected to handle. The structural components of a wooden shipping crate can vary based on the weight and dimensions of the load. Additionally, internal wood structures might be required, such as load bearing members, saddles, and supports. Another critical factor we consider is the securement of the item into the crate or box. There are several methods for accomplishing this task, and a few of them are; bolting, blocking, bracing, and steel strapping. Each item being shipped in a wooden shipping container should first have these items evaluated by our professionals, and if required, incorporated into the initial design. Making knowledgeable decisions about the style, the internal structures required, and the securement methods used goes a long way towards the successful shipment of the item.
